What is a UV Light Sterilizer Wand?
A UV sterilizer wand is a hand held device which can be waved across surfaces and household objects to disinfect them from harmful bacteria and viruses that they may be harboring.
Do They Work?
They operate via small led bulbs which emit high quantities of UV-C light.
UV-C is the shortest wavelength in the UV light spectrum and it kills microbes by destroying the bonds between their DNA molecules.
This it has been proven to do with both UV Sanitizer Boxes and Sanitizer Wands.
The only issue with the wands, as opposed to the boxes, is usability.
A single cycle in the controlled conditions of a sanitizer box can be guaranteed to sterilize whereas the results with the wand will be far more variable depending on how correctly it is used.
Factors which affect efficacy are the distance from the surface being sanitized with a distance of 13cm or less being seen to be most effective, the angle of the beam with a direct beam, as you may guess, being more effective, and the exposure time.
Note that UV Sanitizer Wands, like all UV sanitizer devices can disinfect any surface but will do far less well on porous materials and non linear surfaces such as clothing or fabrics for example, compared to smooth flat, non porous surfaces, ie. plastic, glass, metals etc.
Are They Safe to Use?
Long term UV-C light exposure is believed to cause skin cancer in humans which is why UV-C sanitizer boxes and phone sanitizers are generally designed to only operate with the lids closed.
A sanitizer wand can not work like that obviously so care needs to be taken. Many wands though will have a built-in safety feature that allows them to operate when the beam of light is facing downward i.e. away from the face.
Can a UV Sterilizer Wand kill Coronavirus Covid-19?!
UV-C light can certainly kill the Coronavirus, as it can any other virus or bacteria. The question is can these devices produce the required amount, and are they able to eradicate it from all points of a surface in the allotted time.
Covid-19 is of course extremely new so none of these devices have yet been able to be tested against it, something which will certainly change in the following weeks and months.
It is a so called enveloped virus, similar in nature to Influenza A (H1N1) something which has been shown to be destroyed by the levels of UV-C light contained in any of the products listed on this site.
This and the fact that hospitals are already employing UV-C light to defend themselves against Coronavirus Covid-19 means it would be reasonable to think the answer is yes. But, to be strictly scientific about it, the official answer is…it is yet to be proved!
Where can I buy a UV Sterilizer Wand online?
During the pandemic it has increasingly difficult to find any kind of UV sterilizer equipment. Production can barely keep up with demand.
This though seems to apply more to UV Sanitizer Boxes and Phone Sanitizers than wands. So you should have better luck.
In the reviews below you will see links to online stores (mainly Amazon) which, at the time of writing at least, have them in stock and at what we have observed to be the best prices.
>> THE BEST UV STERILIZER WANDS YOU CAN BUY TODAY
Of all the UV sterilizer products out there today the wands seem to be the most prolific. Possibly because they are easier and cheaper to make, in the present Coronavirus crisis many manufacturers, especially in China where they had a head start in seeing the potential, have started to mass produce them.
